Seedling

Seedling

Seedling is a tree care app that uses Augmented Reality to teach kids and parents how to care for trees, fostering social responsibility through goal-based education.

As part of a 3-person team, I conducted user research, designed the app’s interface, and led user testing.

How It Works

Research Process

Participants:

4 Citizens: Representing the general public’s perspective and experience.

3 Experts: Offering professional insights into tree care and environmental practices.

Methodologies:

• Conducted affinity mapping to identify common themes and pain points.

• Analyzed findings to define and understand the target users and their needs during the research phase

Secondary Research

Interviewees

Interview Notes

Based on the interviews notes, we did the affinity mapping

User Type

Persona

Amy is a 10-year-old elementary school kid. She wants to learn how to take care of trees in her school and neighborhood because she wants to see if she could do it.

Main motivation
To connect with the trees she cares for, respond to their needs, find fulfillment and praise in their healthy growth, and earn rewards.

Painpoint
lack of skills and knowledge in tree care. She wants to help the trees grow healthy but doesn’t know how to start or what they need.

Intention
To be outdoors and connect with trees

Action
Take care of trees in the school yard using AR scanning

Results

The school’s trees will continue to grow nicely in the future, increasing overall natural shade and building Amy’s sense of responsibility.

Design Iterations

From paper prototype..

  • Conducted 3 rounds of user testing with A/B testingto gather insights and validate design choices.

  • Completed 4 rounds of iteration to refine and optimize the design based on user feedback.

What I learned..

UX research process & double diamond

Interview skills such as how to define recruitment plan, interview with others, affinity map the insights

User don't always say what they mean

Observing actions during usability testing emphasizing the importance of studying behavior

User segmentation needs depth

Diving into user type matrix, goals and pain-point uncovered meaningful differences between user types.
